Solar panels in Dénia, on the roof or over the car
When the house roof is not the best place, a carport can be. In Dénia we fitted panels to a customer’s existing carport and connected them to the house. We look at both options before we propose one.
A project in Dénia
An existing carport that now produces power
For a customer in Dénia we added solar panels to the carport they already had and connected them to the home’s electrical system. The structure did not need to be rebuilt; we adapted it to carry the panels safely. The car gets shade, and a surface that was doing nothing now generates electricity.
The full story is in our article on the solar carport in Dénia.
A carport is not automatically the better choice. The house roof usually has more space and a shorter cable run. A carport makes sense when the roof is shaded, awkward, or you would rather keep panels off it, and when the structure is strong enough or can be made so. We compare the two in solar carport versus rooftop panels.
As an estimate, a well-placed system on this coast produces roughly 1,250 to 1,550 kWh per kWp per year, east or west-facing roofs at the low end and south-facing roofs at the high end (EU PVGIS data). What your roof does depends on its angle, shade and how you use power, which is why we look first and put figures on paper after.

Roof or carport
Three places the panels could go
House roof
- Space
- Usually the most.
- Structure
- Checked for condition and fixings.
- Cable route
- Short.
- Permission
- Town hall paperwork for the installation.
- Extra use
- None beyond the power.
Existing carport
- Space
- Limited to the carport’s surface.
- Structure
- Checked whether it can carry panels, adapted if needed.
- Cable route
- Depends on the distance to the house.
- Permission
- Town hall paperwork; the carport itself must be in order.
- Extra use
- Shade for the car, space for an EV charger.
New carport
- Space
- Sized for the panels you need.
- Structure
- Designed to carry them from the start.
- Cable route
- Planned with the build.
- Permission
- A permit for the structure as well as the installation.
- Extra use
- Shade, and a place to plan an EV charger in.
Which one fits your house follows from the survey, and sometimes the answer is both.

More questions
Answers come from our own frequently asked questions, written by the Sunrise Energy team.
Can you put solar panels on my existing carport in Dénia?
Often, yes, if the structure can carry them or can be adapted to. That is what we did for a customer in Dénia; see the carport article. We check the structure before we quote.
How do you choose between the carport and the house roof?
We compare space, sun, the state of each structure and the cable route to the meter. If the roof is shaded or awkward, or you want to keep it clear, the carport can win. Otherwise the roof usually offers more.
Does a carport need a structural check or a permit?
Yes to the check, always. For permits, the installation needs the usual town hall paperwork, and a new carport needs its own permit for the structure. We tell you what applies at your address and Joëlle arranges it.
How does coastal wind affect the mounting?
A carport roof is open underneath, so wind can push from below as well as above. The mounting and fixings are chosen for that and for the salt air near the sea. See protecting panels from strong winds.
Can an EV charger be combined with carport panels?
Yes, and the carport is the obvious place for it. If you are thinking of an electric car, tell us, so the cabling and inverter can be planned for it now.
What do you need for a Dénia quotation?
The address, photos of the roof and the carport, and recent electricity bills. From there we arrange a visit and send a proposal.
